Luxury Cars You Can Buy for Less Than You Think

Luxury cars such as the Jaguar XJ do not always stay at luxury car prices forever. Give depreciation enough time and cars that once sat at the very top of their manufacturers’ ranges can start appearing for the sort of money you might expect to spend on something much more ordinary.

That can mean a lot of car for the money. Big engines, lavish interiors, impressive technology and the kind of road presence normally associated with a much higher price tag can all become surprisingly accessible on the used market.

There is, of course, a catch. A lower purchase price does not make a luxury car cheap to run, and servicing, insurance, fuel and repairs should all be considered before buying.

But assuming you go into it with your eyes open, there are some seriously tempting cars out there.

Jaguar XJ

The Jaguar XJ offers something very different from other luxury saloons.

Earlier XJs had a look that was unmistakably traditional Jaguar, but the X351 generation changed the formula completely. The shape became longer, lower and much more modern, with a sweeping roofline and styling that still stands out today.

Inside, it still delivers the space and comfort expected from a flagship saloon, but the cabin has a character of its own. Plenty of leather, wood and technology are present, but it doesn’t simply feel like Jaguar trying to copy one of its German rivals.

That individuality is a big part of the appeal.

Jaguar took a genuine risk with the design, especially for a car sitting at the top of its range, and more than a decade later it still looks distinctive.

Land Rover Range Rover

The Land Rover Range Rover approaches luxury from a completely different direction.

Rather than being a traditional saloon or grand tourer, it combines the comfort and equipment expected from a high-end car with the size, capability and commanding driving position of a proper 4x4.

That combination has become hugely influential, but the Range Rover was doing it long before luxury SUVs became such a major part of the market.

Later generations pushed the idea much further, with increasingly sophisticated interiors, powerful engines and enough technology to make them feel every bit as luxurious as many flagship saloons.

But the Range Rover has always had another side to it. Underneath all that leather and technology is a car designed to deal with conditions that most luxury vehicles would never be expected to face.

That mix of comfort, presence and genuine capability is what makes the Range Rover so distinctive. It can feel completely at home outside a smart hotel, but it has never forgotten where it came from.

Bentley Continental GT

The Continental GT is probably one of the more obvious cars on this list, but there is a reason for that.

Well... it’s a Bentley.

Even an older Continental GT still looks and feels like an expensive car. The shape has plenty of presence, the interior is filled with leather, wood and metal, and almost everything about it feels substantial.

Then there are the engines. Early cars could be had with Bentley’s enormous W12, giving the Continental GT the performance to match its grand-touring looks.

That combination is really what makes it so appealing. It is quick, comfortable, unmistakably luxurious and just a little bit ridiculous.

And for a car like this, that is hardly a bad thing.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has long been seen as one of the benchmark luxury saloons. It is the car many people think of when they imagine executive comfort, advanced technology and first-class refinement on four wheels.

Part of what makes the S-Class so appealing is the way it prioritises comfort. The cabin is usually spacious, quiet and carefully designed, with a focus on making every journey feel calm and composed. Whether being driven or sitting in the back, the S-Class has always had a reputation for making travel feel easier.

It also carries a certain kind of understated authority. It does not need to look flashy to feel expensive. The S-Class has a confident, polished presence that comes from being at the top of the Mercedes-Benz saloon range.

For those who want a proper luxury car experience, the S-Class is one of the clearest choices. It brings together comfort, technology, refinement and status in a way few cars can match.

Maserati Quattroporte

The Maserati Quattroporte is the wildcard of the list, and that is exactly why it belongs here. While some luxury cars are calm and controlled, the Quattroporte adds drama, style and a sense of theatre.

It is a car with a very different personality to something like an S-Class. The Maserati badge brings a more emotional appeal, helped by elegant styling, a sporting edge and an interior that feels more individual than predictable.

The Quattroporte is not the sensible choice, but luxury cars are not always about being sensible. Sometimes the appeal is in choosing something with character, noise, presence and a bit of danger. That is where the Maserati stands out.

For buyers who want their luxury car to feel more exotic, the Quattroporte is hard to ignore. It offers four-door practicality, premium comfort and Italian performance-car flavour in one very distinctive package.

Why Older Luxury Cars Still Appeal

Perhaps the most interesting thing about these cars is how slowly their sense of specialness can disappear.

Technology moves on and styling changes, but quality materials, powerful engines and the feeling of sitting in something that was originally designed as a manufacturer’s flagship have a way of sticking around.

And these five approach luxury in very different ways.

The Bentley is extravagant, the Jaguar is distinctive, the S-Class is refined, the Maserati is dramatic and the Range Rover is commanding.

None of them needs to be the newest car on the road to make an impression.

That is what makes this end of the used-car market so interesting. Sometimes, a budget that might buy a fairly conventional modern car can also put something much more unusual within reach.

And it is very easy to see why that can be difficult to resist.
