What does battery State of Health mean?
Battery State of Health (SoH) is a percentage that shows the current condition of an EV’s battery compared with its original rated capacity. It can help you understand how much of the battery’s original capacity remains and give you a better picture of its condition.
How much battery degradation is normal?
Some battery degradation is expected over time as an EV is used and charged. After five years, many EV batteries retain around 85% to 92% of their original capacity, although this can vary depending on the vehicle, battery technology and how it has been used. Our free battery health reports show the battery’s State of Health percentage, giving you useful information to consider when assessing an EV.
Are EV batteries recyclable?
Yes. EV batteries can be recycled at the end of their useful life. Manufacturers also have responsibilities for the collection, treatment and recycling of batteries. Battery recycling helps recover valuable materials and supports the wider development of more sustainable EV technology.
Do EVs have a 12V battery?
Yes. Many EVs have a separate 12V battery alongside the main high-voltage battery. The 12V battery powers systems such as vehicle electronics, lighting and other auxiliary functions. Like any vehicle battery, the 12V battery can wear over time, so it is worth considering when assessing the overall condition of an EV.

No. The battery is an important part of an EV, but it is only one part of the vehicle. When assessing an EV, consider its overall condition, vehicle history, mileage, specifications and any available inspection or battery health information. Looking at the full picture can help you make a more informed decision.
