September is here and while it marks the return to school for the majority of the population (finally!), for the farmers out there, the September/October months also mark the start of the brand-new agricultural calendar.
Whilst it varies from farmer to farmer, the agricultural calendar typically involves the following activities over the four seasons:
Autumn
Harvesting (potatoes and sugar beet).
Ploughing and general cultivation taking place.
Seed drilling of winter wheat will begin.
Fertiliser spread over the fields.
Winter
Spreading slurry in preparation for silaging later in the year.
Cattle and livestock care will ramp-up.
General farm maintenance will be carried out such as repair work, cleaning and a machinery check.
Ploughing the ground in preparation for seed sowing/planting.
Spring
Lambing/calving season begins and is a busy time for farmers with offspring needing around the clock care.
The slurry will continue to be spread.
Crops such as potatoes will be planted, fertilised and sprayed to protect from pests.
Seed drilling will start, ready for the harvest.
Summer
Silaging begins.
Haymaking and baling will be carried out.
After months of preparation, the crops will be golden and ready for harvest.
The collection of fruit and vegetables will start in late summer.

When is the best time to buy agricultural machinery?
With most of the heavy-duty, outdoor activity wrapping up around late autumn time, most farmers take the opportunity in the winter months to complete maintenance in including repairs and a machinery check, making this the ideal time to sell to them.
If you are purchasing damaged equipment from us, you may want to purchase this a few months in advance to ensure that you give yourself enough time to complete the repairs and prepare the vehicle, ready for re-sale.
That being said, farmers have an extremely busy year and the last thing that any of them needs is a machine malfunction which could hinder their timely activity, making the demand for working machinery constant.
