Understanding the different Restoration Categories
You'll find a variety of vehicles in our Copart Auctions, such as salvage vehicles, used, repossessed, stolen/recovered and more. Here is a breakdown of all the different categories of vehicles we sell and how they can be useful for your projects.
Salvage Categories
When a vehicle has been declared a write off, the vehicle is assessed by a qualified engineer and given a category that is in line with The Association Of British Insurers defined categories. These categories indicate the level of damage that a vehicle has been sustained.

CAT B - Breaker
A Category B car cannot be returned to the road. You can strip the vehicle to get the parts you need for your repairs, but the structural frame and chassis must be crushed.

CAT S - Repairable Structural
A Category S vehicle will have sustained structural damage to part of the frame or chassis, and the insurer/self-insured owner has decided not to repair the vehicle. These can be repaired and resold, but V5 documents will not be provided with any CAT S vehicle.

CAT N - Repairable Non-Structural
A Category N vehicle will have not sustained any structural damage but may have sustained some safety critical items that will need to be replaced, for example, steering and suspension parts. These can make the perfect project cars.

CAT C - Repairable Salvage
The estimated cost for the necessary repair of the known damage of the vehicle is greater than the market valuation, as defined by the insurer/owner at the date of the incident.

CAT D - Repairable Salvage
The estimated cost for the necessary repair of the known damage is less than the market valuation, as defined by the insurer/owner at the date of the incident.
Used Categories
These categories are outside of the ABI Code of Practice and are for vehicles that are not classified as a total loss. Although these vehicles have not been classified as salvage, there is still a chance that they could be damaged. Used Unrecorded and Minimal Damage vehicles would be great for if you are just starting out or looking for a quick project.

CAT U - Used Unrecorded
This is a vehicle that has not been classed as a write off, which usually means that the vehicle has little to no damage, requiring minimal work to be returned to the road.

CAT X - Stolen Recovered Minimal Damage
These are vehicles that were stolen from their previous owner, but were recovered after the insurance company had already paid out compensation. These were then sold by the insurance company on to a remarketing specialist such as Copart. Stolen Recovered vehicles have huge potential for resale as stock usually consists of high-value items that have minimal damage and low mileage.

BreakerBid4U
CAT B vehicles cannot be returned to the road, but can be broken down for parts and used to fix other vehicles. So you can source a large number of parts from just one vehicle.
To buy a Category B vehicle you do need to have the correct license and meet certain requirements, outlined in our CAT B Buying page.
If you do not have the required licenses, you can use our BreakerBid4U service.
BreakerBid4U allows you to submit your maximum bid on a CAT B vehicle, via our online form. Our team will then incrementally bid on your behalf. If you win, we will arrange for you to attend a breaking session at one of our 6 breaker locations, where you can strip the vehicle of all bolted parts. Once you have taken the parts that you need, our team will remove the engine and gearbox for you, which you can then take away.
