With such a wide variety of stock heading through our auctions, it can be easy for certain items to go unnoticed. That’s why in late 2018, we felt that a focus on classic vehicles was long overdue. So, among a number of promotional activities including news articles and social media highlights, we decided to treat our hard-working classic car buyers by launching the Classic Car Prize Draw.
The prize draw allowed ‘Classic Buyers’, who had purchased and repaired a classic vehicle from a Copart auction, to send in their 'before' and 'after' pictures along with a description of the repair for the chance to win £250 in account credit.
After receiving several impressive submissions, we were happy to announce that the very deserving winner was Jeremy Sutton, who provided us with his 1987 Ford Sierra RS Cosworth repair story (see below).
About the Ford Sierra RS Cosworth
The original Ford Sierra RS Cosworth “Cossie” (only manufactured by Ford Europe between 1986 and 1987), was a high-performance version of the Sierra, Ford's award-winning model. Known as one of the ‘Fast Fords’, the sporty car was designed and built to win races with the help of its notable 2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine (a rare find in the late 80s). However, the RS Cosworth wasn’t just recognised for its impressive performance. Its standout appearance was also known to turn heads with features such as wide wheel arches and a ‘monumental’ rear wing nicknamed a “whale-tail” by car enthusiasts. It was a true icon of the 1980s.
Before
Jeremy purchased the sad looking Ford Sierra in our Newbury auction back in December 2017. Taking on a classic car repair can be quite a challenge and the RS Cosworth proved no exception to that as it required a number of missing parts and hadn’t run for many years.
Due to the original RS Cosworth only being manufactured for two years, Jeremy had to work hard to source the rare original parts needed to restore the vehicle. This included a bonnet, front bumper, grille, header tank, ecu, brake callipers, brake discs, brake pads, petrol tank; and interior elements such as seats, a gearstick, door cards and more.
In addition, the vehicle also needed numerous body repairs and a complete engine rebuild to be properly restored and returned to the road.
After
What a result! As you can see below, Jeremy did a fantastic job, with the Ford Sierra RS Cosworth looking almost unrecognisable to when we first saw it.
Congratulations Jeremy! A great triumph.
